History of the Fernwell

The Fernwell Building designed by Hermann Preusse is one of Spokane's oldest buildings, built in 1891. The Building is located in what was then and is now the heart of the City's commercial center. Housing a men's clothing store for 90 years on its main floor, it provided office space for prominent doctors, lawyers, dentists, architects and insurance firms on the second and third floors. Hotel rooms were located on the fourth and fifth floors with a dining room occupying part of the sixth floor. The owner and builder was Rollin Charles Hyde. The land itself first belonged to James N. Glover, the "Father of Spokane," who later sold his interest which Hyde acquired in 1888.

In 1985 after nearly a century of outstanding service that wore her down, a complete renovation recreated the Fernwell Building, a brand new Building inside a beautiful century old classic structure. In the last five years, major upgrades have been made to the electrical, HVAC and data systems with state of the art equipment and technology. The Fernwell Building is the premier location to do business in Downtown Spokane.

The Fernwell continues to be one of Spokane's most beloved icons of days gone by. The local management and ownership is committed to ensuring all Building Tenants have access to not only the latest in technology, but are able to enjoy the classic beauty of their office in a well maintained historical gem.
